Social Media is obviously a hit. People love scrolling though their feed and feeling connected to their communities without having to leave the house. Billions of people... However, we come across many businesses that do not really manage their Social Media Presence. There are so many sites, for one thing. Posts take a ton of time to curate and get just right. Then there are videos, live events, the list goes on and on. We find many clients are either disinterested in the Social Media aspect of marketing, or they are so overwhelmed with their actual jobs the just don't have time for it. For those who want to dabble in the DIY, here are a few tips to do what you can to stay relevant with your audience.
What Are the Major Platforms?
Great for video and image content, as well as community engagement, events, and information sharing
Designed for attractive images, reels (videos) and other visual content
Geared toward design, crafting and ideation
Text heavy and meant for collaboration, advice, and instructions
Snap Chat
“Snaps” of video chats that are deleted after they are played
280 Characters and a whirlwind of engagement
TikTok
1-10 minute videos on anything under the sun. Informational Videos, Cooking Demonstrations, Language Lessons, Dancing around the house, old episodes of Judge Judy – the list goes on and the possibilities for creativity are endless. You can also monetize your popularity once you gain enough engagement (be advised, 10,000 followers is the minimum to get started)
YouTube
The OG of video posting and sharing, with a wide audience and the ability to monetize your videos using commercial playbacks
Know Your Audience
Each social media platform has its own audience, so the type of business you have and what you are marketing makes a difference.
Younger Audiences (Gen Z):
Snap Chat
TikTok
YouTube
Older Audiences (Millennials and Gen X)
TikTok
YouTube
Business-to-Business
To reach the widest audience, particularly when just starting out online, make sure to have Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn at a minimum. In our experience, these three will provide the biggest bang for the buck in terms of ease of use and the ability to create and publish content quickly.
A Quick How-To on the Meta Platform
Meta (Facebook and Instagram)
Meta, the corporation that now owns Facebook and Instagram, has created a platform that can be found at business.facebook.com This is a newly updated portal where you can create posts for both Facebook and Instagram platforms and then schedule them. Once you’ve created your content, just upload it, add your post verbiage and hashtags, and schedule it.
Over the past two years, this tool has really evolved and made it easy. You can now separate the platforms with a toggle so that you are able to customize to fit their user habits (think "Link in Bio" for Insta vs. just pasting the link into the post on FB). Many of our clients continue with their own posts, and we can schedule the content we create for them to fit a cadence that makes sense.
The platform also provides help with hashtags, popular posting times for your audience and myriad other tools to help you test and grow your engagement.
TL;DR
Get started on a couple of the platforms most popular with your audience by posting at least twice a week. Throw in some fun things, some sales things, and some human-interest items to help your audience learn who you really are, because being relatable helps your customers trust you and your business.
If you have the time to do a video every time, TikTok may be the fastest growing platform, and YouTube has an incredibly wide audience as well. If you do not have that time, stick to platforms where posts are most popular.
